One Line

A single ink line drawn in one continuous motion across two metres of linen.

Drawing · 03:45

Shot from directly overhead, this film follows a single loaded brush drawn across two metres of linen without lifting once. Ariesson mixes the ink thicker than usual so it holds its edge at speed, then commits to the line from a standing position — there is no sketch beneath it, no second attempt. The film includes the brief moment after the line is finished where he steps back and simply looks at it, the ink still wet and moving slightly under the studio lights.

Materials Used

Iron gall ink, sumi brush, raw stretched linen, drafting straightedge for the run-up.

The Finished Piece

Single Line, No. 7

Single Line, No. 7

The finished piece kept the line exactly as drawn in the film — no retouching — set against a ground of dried, cracked ochre wash.
